Operation Blessing by Maddie Cooper
Operation Blessing
by
Maddie Cooper
My experience raising money to help a country in need was one of a kind. When I first heard about the awful earthquake in Chile, I have to admit that I was not even sure where Chile was. But I found out that it is a country is South America, and it is not a particularly rich country. I figured that what may not mean a lot to us here in America would make a world of difference in a place like Chile, so that is what inspired me to do something about helping those people. Watching the tragic experience that happened there - no food, clothes or shelter - made me realize that instead of just listening to what I’m hearing and doing nothing, I should actually take the initiative and do something to help.
Wouldn’t it be great to organize a big neighborhood fundraiser for these unfortunate people? I thought so too, so the first people I called on were my best friends next-door, Maddy and Kenzie. I was pleased to find out they would be glad to help me. The next thing I had to do was pick a date and alert all of the neighbors, so I spent Tuesday night emailing everyone about the big event coming up for Saturday.
Then came the hard part. I got my mom and dad to run to the market to get all of the supplies. We got together that Friday night and baked all night long. We baked brownies, cupcakes, muffins and cookies. I lost track of how many cupcakes we made because there were so many. And I don’t know how long we stayed up baking but when we finally quit for the evening it seemed like it was already Saturday morning. I sent my mom to the grocery store to get more cake mix because we did so much “cupcake testing” we ran out of cupcake mix.
We made lots of signs to put up around the neighborhood to make sure everyone knew what we were planning to do. I sent out emails to all of the neighbors again to make sure they were ready to buy our cupcakes and give donations.
We woke up early to set up and sell what we made. We were out there from nine to two. It was cold and windy, but the late hours from the night before and messy kitchens paid off when we counted up our money and turned in over $800 to the Red Cross.
So what did I learn from all of this? The phrase,“a little bit goes a long way” really took meaning to me when we heard that $800 will provide a lot of food and shelter for people in that part of the world. When I hear more and more about the country in devastation,I feel a little bit better knowing that I did something to help. It also showed me how generous Americans can be when it comes to someone else in need. Great job, St. Ives neighbors, and great job, Americans!

Like father, like daughter at the state fair
Thirteen-year-old Beverly Foster finished first in her class for showmanship in the beef heifer competition at the North Carolina State Fair Saturday.
This was her first year showing a heifer, a female cow which hasn’t yet given birth, but Beverly has previously shown goats and sheep.
Beverly is the fifth generation to live on the 200-acre family farm in Epsom. Competing in shows is a skill and tradition she learned from her father, Al Foster.
“We show at county 4H clubs all around Franklin County and Durham County,” Al said. “I’ve done it since I was a boy. We’ve shown hogs, pigs and cows.”
Al considers the activity a family affair, plus a learning tool for his daughter.
“All the kids come to the state fair with their goats, sheep, pigs and cows, and their parents help,” Al said. “It doesn’t matter if we win or lose — it’s a chance for the child to learn to take responsibility and is an activity parents and kids can do together.”
Preparation for the competition begins long before participants enter the ring.
Franklin County farmer and extension agent Martha Mobley offered one of her heifers for Beverly to train and show at this year’s event.
Starting 45 days before the show, Beverly broke the heifer in by putting a halter on her and walking her around every day. Next was the beautification process.
“We washed her and combed her hair out and blow-dried her,” Al said. “Once we got to the fair, we washed and blow-dried her again and clipped her hair to make it pretty and even, and then took her to the showing.”
Judges score both the animal and its handler. The heifer is scored on how good it looks, what kind of baby it could have and the quality of meat it might potentially give if slaughtered.
“The best part is when you are in the ring with the animal and the judge is looking at you and you are trying to keep the animal still,” Al said. “It’s like being on a mountain hang gliding, and you have that shot of adrenaline — and then it’s over.”
According to Al, when he asked his daughter if she enjoyed it, she said, “Yes, because I like the attention and learning responsibility.”
Beverly is a member of the 4H Club in Franklin County, and hopes to show more cattle at next year’s fair.

This year at the awards’ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, Josh will be receiving six highpoint trophies (1 championship and 5 reserves).

Kendall Thomason places 2nd at the 7th Annual Gail Parkins Memorial Ovarian Cancer Walk
September was Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Vance County residents proved their dedication to the cause. The 7th Annual Gail Parkins Memorial Ovarian Cancer Walk , which was held on September 26th, raised over $241,000 for ovarian cancer research for Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. This walk was started by Melanie Parkins Batchelor after her mother, Gail Parkins, lost her battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 56. The goal of the Parkins family and other families touched by this disease is to raise the level of awareness of this disease and to provide financial support for research.
This year’s walk had 124 teams, from all over the state, who came to pay tribute to all those touched by ovarian cancer and to work together for all those who continue to be affected by this disease. Out of these teams Kendall's team placed 2nd in raising the most money for the cause.
Dona’s Dream Team, has been participating in the walk for five years. The team captain, Kendall Thomason started the team after her great-aunt, Dona Conner, lost her battle with ovarian cancer. With the help of several Vance County residents, Dona’s Dream Team, has a very successful bake sale every September. Once again this year, people were very generous and the team raised over $8,300 for the walk.
Dona’s Dream team would like to thank all of their supporters and team members and encourage everyone to continue to help in the upcoming year with their efforts. The hope is that in the near future there will be an early detection test developed for ovarian cancer. Please visit the website at ovarianawareness.org to learn more about ovarian cancer and the ongoing fight for the cure.

KVA Baseball Allstars
Several members of the KVA family qualified and played on Northern Granville Athletic Association Dixie Youth Allstar teams this summer. After competing in the NGAA Dixie Youth League baseball season the top players are selected by the coaches for the Allstar teams. In the AA Division Jack Cheever and Marc Howell both 3rd graders were selected for the Allstar team. Jack and Marc both play right field. In the 9-10 year old Minor League Division Lane Humphries (6th grader) and Banks Conde (5th Grader) made the cut. Lane is a catcher and considered one of the big sticks on the team while Banks is one of the starting pitchers and plays 1st Base.
The District 10 Regional tournament for the Minor League was played in Louisburg starting June 27. In the tournament which was a double elimination, the Oxford Allstars faced teams from Louisburg, Bunn, Franklinton, Warren County and Youngsville. The Oxford Allstars went undefeated in the Regional Tourney qualifying for a spot in the State Dixie Youth Tournament.
The 2009 NC Dixie Youth Baseball AAA State Tournament with 16 teams from across the state was played in Clarkton starting July 18. The team from Oxford performed well and breezed through Game 1 and Game 2. In Game 3 the Oxford Allstars were defeated by Dunn. Oxford then beat Boger City which set them up to face Dunn again. In a hard fought game with Banks on the mound and Lane catching the Oxford team came out on top. Going into the semi-final game with one loss each against each other, Oxford again faced the Allstars from Dunn. This time the Oxford team did not finish on top, ending their tournament bid in 3rd place.
The AA Coach Pitch Regional tournament was hosted by NGAA at the Webb field in Oxford. The local team won big, going undefeated in the tournament. After winning the district the Oxford team headed to Eden for the state tournament starting July 11. The team from Oxford went up against teams from Fayetteville, Lumberton, Wilmington and they faced Dallas in the finals winning 13-4. Oxford again won big with a 6-0 record in the state tournament. This was the first state win for a team from the North Granville Athletic Association.
Their win in the state set up the Oxford AA Allstars to proceed to the regional tournament representing North Carolina. The Regional tournament was held in Goodlettesville, Tennessee starting July 24. The Oxford Allstars finished 3rd in the entire region. Quite an impressive achievement for Jack, Marc and the AA Oxford Allstars winning the State Championship & finishing 3rd in the Regional which started the season with 1600 eight years olds.
Congrats to all the KVA Allstars!
