The Kerr-Vance Academy faculty is completing a book study as part of this year’s professional development. The book is called Focus: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning by Michael Schmoker. The author promotes the importance of finding clarity in the curriculum, sound lesson delivery, and authentic literacy across all grade levels. The faculty has been working to revise curriculum with a vertical emphasis, hone lesson design to check for student understanding during the lesson, and use best literacy practices with emphasis on writing, close reading. The last session was held this past Monday and the focus was interactive lecture. Teachers learned techniques to guide lecture and presentations to increase engagement and check for understanding.
