AP U.S History

Welcome to AP U.S History

Hello, students, parents, and teachers,

I am excited to begin my first year here 2018-2019 at Kerr Vance Academy.

Teaching your child is a tremendous responsibility and I will do my best to ensure that each student has a safe and motivating learning experience in this upcoming year. However I cannot do this without the help of you, the parents.  We are partners in the learning process.

The AP U.S. History course focuses on the development of disciplinary practices and reasoning skills and an understanding of content organized around seven themes:

  1. American and National Identity
  2. Politics and Power
  3. Work, Exchange, and Technology
  4. Culture and Society
  5. Migration and Settlement
  6. Geography and the Environment
  7. America in the World

However their are TWO main things I would like to stress to both you as the parents and your child. The first is the reading. Reading in APUSH is critical for the success of the student. Each week the student should and will be required to read as least one chapter per week. As well as complete weekly chapter assignments. If you don't keep up with the reading you will fall behind in the content and not be successful in the class or on the test. The second part is the writing of the class. On the AP Exam the DBQ/FRQ section represents 50% of the test. In order for students to be successful, they will need to work/dedicate themselves to becoming better writers. If they are not willing to do this, then they will struggle with many things in my class.

I believe it is very important to communicate between home and school and will do my best to keep you informed.   Should you have any questions, comments or concerns at anytime throughout the year, please contact me at the school or via email: dmunns@kerrvance.com

Warm Regards,

Mr. Munns
