Spanish I
Prerequisites: None
Teacher recommendation needed and from which discipline: None
Credit: 1 per year
Description: This course introduces the students to the Spanish language and the cultural elements found in Spanish speaking countries. Students will develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using simple sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – with emphasis on the ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Spanish II
Prerequisites: Spanish I
Teacher recommendation needed and from which discipline: None
Credit: 1 per year
Description: This course continues to review grammar taught in Spanish I. There is an increase in vocabulary knowledge and several new tenses are introduced. Emphasis is placed on grammar, vocabulary, and communication. Upon completion, students should be able to use basic idioms and vocabulary to communicate with other Spanish speakers. They should be comfortable with the tenses previously learned as well as the subjunctive mood and idiomatic expressions.

Spanish III
Prerequisites: 90% or better in Spanish II
Teacher recommendation needed and from which discipline: Yes, Spanish II Teacher
Credit: 1 per year
Description: This course provides a continued development and refinement in proficiency in all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – with emphasis on the ability to interact orally and in writing. Communication uses more complex language structures on a variety of topics, moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. At this level, students comprehend the main ideas of the authentic materials that they read and hear and are able to identify significant details when the topics are familiar.

Spanish IV
Prerequisites: 90% or better in Spanish III
Teacher recommendation needed and from which discipline: Yes, Spanish III Teacher
Credit: 1 per year
Description: Students develop more sophisticated communication skills in all four areas – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – with emphasis on the ability to interact orally and in writing. The authentic reading selections are emphasized at this level. Students communicate using more complex language structures and express abstract ideas with reasonable fluency. Students should be able to create and listen with understanding to reports and presentations.
